Service Overview
What Happens During DOT Physicals? During DOT physicals, a licensed healthcare provider, known as a DOT examiner, conducts a thorough physical examination to assess the overall health and fitness of a commercial driver. The exam typically starts with a review of the driver’s medical history and medications to determine any underlying health conditions that may affect their ability to drive safely. The examiner will then assess the driver’s vision, ensuring they meet the DOT's minimum standards for distance and near vision. Drivers may need to wear corrective lenses if their vision does not meet the requirements. The hearing test is also performed, ensuring that the driver can hear sufficiently to operate a commercial vehicle safely. In addition to vision and hearing assessments, the examiner will check the driver’s blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory health, and overall physical condition. The DOT physical also includes an urine test to screen for diabetes and kidney function. If the driver has a medical condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, the examiner may ask for additional documentation or medical evaluations before clearing the driver for a medical certificate. If the driver passes the physical exam, they will receive a DOT medical certificate, which is valid for up to two years unless there are additional health concerns. If there are any concerns, the driver may be required to schedule follow-up appointments or provide further documentation.
